Read about how Mountain Ash Comprehensive School have been striving towards embedding LGBT+ awareness and inclusion across the school
As part of World Teachers Day, we want to share and celebrate the fantastic work Mountain Ash Comprehensive School has recently accomplished.
The Welsh Baccalaureate department was invited to be part of the PRB and immediately took on the mantle of tackling LGBT issues. The Community Challenge provided an excellent spring board to encompass a whole school approach. The Challenge would entail Year 12/13 pupils to become experts in certain LGBT issues: Homophobic Bullying; Homophobia in Sport; Same Sex Relationships; Same Sex Parents; Coming Out as a Teenager and then deliver lessons to Year 9/10. This Challenge would continue into the next academic year, whereby Year 12/13 would peer mentor Year 10 as part of the latter’s Community Challenge: delivering lessons on the KS3 PSE Day on LGBT issues, focusing on some of the topics above. A credit to Hilary Williams, Head of Welsh Baccalaureate at MACS who was the driver of this fantastic work.
